I'm talking about my computer. This morning is the second time ive woken the thing up to bad video. Yesterday while at work it had crashed hardcore. So,
advice from the tech types? I know i need a new machine. What parts and such do you guys recommend. So i can get an estimate of how much this will cost.
You can try to just upgrade the neccesaries, instead of buying a whole new machine. I swear, you just got a new video card. You can probably salvage your old
tower, but an updated mother board might be needed. Quad core processors are super cheap these days and are all it takes to run the best games. Don't skimp
on the ram, two gigs is a minimum these days. The biggest problem is probably your hard drive. Replace it. I wouldn't get any of the 10k rpm ones, that
extra speed just means extra cash. Whats your budget? Budgets help a man put pieces together. I will scope around and talk to Ryan (from the SoS forums) about
what he thinks would be good.
Look at me! I'm some kind of God Damned dramatic camera angle! Weeee!!
All I can tell you on the matter is that Edo and I upgraded our computers at Christmas, entirely (rebuilt from the floor up) and it cost about $1200 for mine.
New Case
Asus P5KC mother board
Intel Core2Duo 3GHz processor
2 gigs of really fast ram (I'd have to ask Edo what kind)
NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT
150 gig Hard Drive (the smallest HD they were selling at the time!)
DVD ROM drive (The read/writes were too expensive for our budget at the time)
The only problem we had (and if you know this in advance, it's not a problem, just pre-download them) is that the ASUS mobo needed its drivers updated to
get everything working properly.
And, the computer hasn't even hiccuped at Vanguard on relatively high settings, Tabula Rasa runs like a dream, NWN2 has no hitches on high settings..er...
I can't think of anything else ^.^
OH! And, you should look into "Open Office" (really good freeware put out by the same company that does Java) instead of worrying about new
Microsloth stuff. And, as long as you slick your old Hard Drive, you should legally be able to use the version of Windows you already have.
Honestly, Zin, you're shooting yourself in the foot if you don't get Vista.
First of all, I use it. It's fine. It works well. I don't notice a loss in performance at all in my games.
Secondly, games are already starting to be designed for Vista. If you want compatability, you need Vista.
Thirdly, XP is going to be phased out in a year. No more support or updates. If you want a machine that will carry you into the next several years, get
Vista.
All those horror stories? Are just horror stories. take it from a user that USES it. it's fine.
My moms machine has vista and i hate it! >.<
There's also the point of, if i build the machine myself, ill have to spend HOW MUCH on vista software? Yeah. Point for keeping XP for a while longer. Hey,
its me. Im stubborn. I kept 98 long after xp was out too.
Get it and i'll help dumb it down to the point that it functions, looks, operates, and runs just like XP. Then at least you'll have the DX10
Functionality without the sidebar, aero interface, and the ability to keep an operating system that will last you longer?
